Chapter 4

EVERETT LAY in bed one night in August, quietly waiting in the dark. He was fully dressed except for his boots, but he kept this fact hidden by the covers pulled over his body. He knew it wouldn’t be long now, because he’d looked at his bedside clock before turning out the lights a little while ago. It had been after ten thirty when he’d climbed into bed, so any minute now he would hear the sound of a little rock being thrown against his bedroom window. He smiled and pictured handsome JB, his very own JB, in his mind’s eye.

And there it was. Just a faint little ping on the glass, and his lover was there, down in the darkness and behind the cover of that big old evergreen tree. He didn’t bother to look out the window this time. Instead, he climbed out of bed, pulled on his boots, and quietly slipped out of his room and down the hall to the stairs. Not even one step creaked as he hastened down to the front door and out to where his lover waited behind the tree.

“Hey, JB,” Everett whispered loudly. “Are you back there?”

“Sure I am,” JB answered softly, stepping out into the open. “What did you expect? You heard the pebble on the window, didn’t you?”

“Yeah. Of course I did. That’s why I’m here.” He rushed up to JB and pulled him back into the deeper darkness behind the tree. There he put his arms around his lover and kissed him. They clung to each other for a few minutes, neither wanting to stop the feverish kissing.

Everett pulled back first, but not from the embrace. He held on to JB as tightly as he could while they talked. “That was a great idea you had about exchanging notes in that old Prince Albert tobacco tin box… and then sticking it in the branches somewhere in the middle behind this tree. I don’t think anyone else will find it here.”

“Well, my daddy smokes a pipe so it was easy to get an empty box. Besides, it has a pretty tight-fitting lid so rainwater won’t get in. Let’s just hope the wind doesn’t blow it out of the tree and into the yard where anybody could find it, and maybe throw it away. Or find a secret note inside! I guess you didn’t have any trouble locating it.”

“No. It was right where Annie Belle told me it would be. That was smart, too, having Annie Belle deliver the message.”

“Thanks. Now you just have to find an excuse to sneak back here every day and check for a message from me. There won’t be one every single day, of course… but I’ll try to come by here when it’s dark and no one will see me at your house. If someone saw me, they might think I was trying to burn your house down or something like that.”

Everett laughed. “Or else they might catch on that something was up between us.
